To avoid the stigma, the World Health Organization (WHO) opted last month to rename monkeypox to mpox.
The prevalence of the disease was highest in West and Central Africa and transmission of the virus occurred mainly during sexual intercourse between men. WHO said the name was also used in racist language, both online and elsewhere in society.
