Zelensky will also address Congress during his visit to Washington.
At the White House, Zelensky will announce a “significant new security assistance package” with Biden, White House Press Secretary Karina Jean-Pierre said.
The visit “will highlight the unwavering commitment of the United States to support Ukraine for as long as necessary,” said Jean-Pierre.
Biden to announce an additional $1.8 billion in security assistance. This will be a significant increase in the amount of aid and the Patriot missile system is also included in the package, a senior US official said.
Biden and Zelensky will discuss weapons and training provided by the United States and its allies, sanctions and other pressures on Russia, as well as needed economic and humanitarian assistance to Ukraine, a senior White House official said.
Zelensky is expected to address both houses of Congress after the White House meeting. As announced by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, “a very particular focus will be on democracy”.
The visit was quietly planned after a Dec. 11 phone call between Biden and Zelensky, followed by a formal invitation a week ago and confirmation of the visit on Sunday.
The President of Ukraine confirmed on Twitter that he is already on his way to Washington.

This is Zelensky’s first overseas trip since February of Russia a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
