Tesla is about to deliver a 2022 sales year that really smacks of burnt. Model Y has been a big seller throughout the year and gets most of the credit for Tesla now being the best-selling brand in Norway, by a good margin.
Earlier this fall, it looked like Volkswagen might give them a fight for first place, but that doesn’t seem very realistic anymore.
Registration data updated daily by the Road Traffic Information Council (OFV) shows that Tesla has launched a violent acceleration ramp. They have registered 3,254 cars so far in December. That’s far more than Volkswagen, which has 1,882 cars sold so far in the month.
Avoid long waiting lists
There have been 19,152 new Tesla cars on Norwegian roads so far this year. The corresponding number of VWs is 17,921.
However, it’s hard to know if that reflects sales. Volkswagen is known to have a large backlog of its electric cars, meaning cars that have been ordered but not yet delivered.
Tesla, for its part, has received a large number of cars for the country and has thus managed to avoid long waiting lists.

Race against time
While for a long time it was VW and Toyota that fought for first place in Norway, this year the latter was clearly overtaken. Toyota has delivered 12,441 cars as of Dec. 19. Followed by BMW (11,685 cars) and Volvo with 9,877 cars.
Both BMW and Volvo have also delivered more cars so far in December than Toyota. But it’s hard to say if it’s enough for one of them to finish third in the sprint.
The number of cars delivered was a record in November and the pace continues in December. Towards the end of the year, a lot of cars arrived, especially at the port of Drammen, which is the largest receiving point for new cars in Norway. Here it has become a race against time for many importers and dealers.

Bad with the Christmas holidays
Many therefore also have to use the Christmas space to get cars out, the Christmas holidays can be bad for many in the industry. It also comes into play here that there will be a weight tax on all cars and VAT on electric cars above NOK 500,000, starting on New Year’s Eve.
This can save several tens of thousands on registering the car in 2022, rather than waiting until after the new year. Naturally, many people want to use them.
This is disappearing and needs to be sold before the new year
