It first landed in Norway in August 2018, when several thousand customers had already been waiting for their Hyundai Kona for a long time.
The good range and the favorable price were the two most important strengths. The car didn’t excel in many other areas, perhaps especially not in design. But the Kona came at a time when there was far less to choose from than today, while there were long waiting lists for the vast majority of electric cars.
Fast-forward to 2022, cars like the Kona have fallen behind a bit. There are now many compact and electric crossovers to choose from. In addition, larger SUVs have taken over a large part of the sales, such as Hyundai’s Ioniq 5. It is the start of a completely new electric car venture of the group.
The first pictures
Hyundai responds to this by launching a new generation Kona Electric, expected in 2023. And it is truly unrecognizable. Just like on Ioniq 5, Hyundai goes much further in terms of design.
Now they’ve just sent the first pictures and given us some details about the car, which comes with at least three different powertrains: electric, plug-in hybrid and traditional petrol engine.

Store design endringer
And to start with something we don’t know: Hyundai so far says nothing about battery packs or range. Nor anything about the reload speed.
But what is clear is that Kona is growing significantly. The length has been lengthened by 15 centimeters to 4.33 metres. It also became 2.5 centimeters wider. This should provide better interior space.
In terms of design, we’re really talking about changes. Kona has received several elements that hint at the Ioniq 5’s design language. The front features, among other things, the light line that Hyundai calls the Pixelated Seamless Horizon Lamp.
Last year, Kona received two major changes
Double screen
The powerful wheel arches with integrated front and rear lights should give the Kona strength and a robust appearance. The car is also full of so-called parametric surfaces, just like on the Ioniq 5. Sharp diagonal lines break up the sidewall design and tie together dark chrome elements from the window moldings to the spoiler.
There is therefore more space inside, as well as a new, flowing dashboard design. Kona features dual 12.3” screens. Mood lighting should help create a pleasant atmosphere on board and at the same time have a beneficial effect. With the selector lever mounted on the steering column, space is freed up in the center console.
Hyundai promises they will release more details about the new Kona in the coming months.
