The number of diabetics increases every year. Because it is important that everyone knows how to prevent diabetes.

“Modify lifestyle (lifestyle) is healthy by exercising diligently, consuming wholesome foods, and avoiding instant foods and sugary drinks,” Dr. Syifa said at Not onlineMonday (19/12/2022).

Dr Syifa said diabetes is one of the most common causes of death in the world, or what is often referred to as diabetes silent killer.

“Why? Because diabetes can affect all organs in the body without the sufferer realizing it. Quite a few diabetics realize they have diabetes after their disease is severe or in an advanced stage,” he said. member of Nahdlatul Ulama Executive Health Institute (PBNU).

In general, he explained, diabetes is divided into two types, namely type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes occurs when the body is unable to produce sufficient amounts of insulin, so the glucose or sugar consumed cannot be processed.

Meanwhile, type 2 diabetes is a condition in which the body can’t use insulin as well as it should. Apart from that, diabetes can also occur during pregnancy or gestational diabetes.

“Whatever the type, this disease can therefore cause high blood sugar levels. If left for a long time, uncontrolled high blood sugar can cause a number of dangerous complications,” explained Dr. Syifa.

To reduce the risk of diabetes, be it type 1 or 2, you can follow a number of ways suggested by Dr. Syifa, as follows:

1. Get regular exercise

Regular exercise can help the body use the hormone insulin more effectively, so blood sugar levels can be more controlled. In this way, diabetes can be avoided.

“Make time to exercise at least 30 minutes a day. Something light like joggingas long as it’s routine,” said Dr. Syifa.

2. Implement a healthy diet
Living a healthy diet, she said, is one of the main keys to avoiding diabetes. So it is advisable to limit the consumption of foods and drinks high in sugar, calories and fat, for example processed foods, cakes, ice creams and fast foods.

“Do not consume too much sugar, maximum 4 tablespoons a day. Increase your consumption of vegetables, fruits, nuts and whole grains that contain a lot of fiber and complex carbohydrates,” she explained.

3. Handle stress well
It also revealed that stress not managed properly can increase the risk of diabetes. This is because when you experience stress, your body will release the stress hormone (cortisol) which can spike your blood sugar levels.

Not only that, when stressed the body will also tend to feel hungry more easily and will be forced to eat more. Therefore, you need to be good at managing stress so that you don’t let off steam by eating or snacking excessively.

4. Check your blood sugar regularly
Dr. Syifa advised the public to regularly check their blood sugar at least once every six months. The goal is to control blood pressure and also help minimize the risk of developing dangerous diseases and serious complications.

“This is important for controlling blood pressure and also helps minimize the risk of developing dangerous diseases, such as diabetes,” she explained.

“There’s nothing wrong with doing this to detect blood sugar levels in the body as early as possible so that if you have diabetes, you’ll get treatment more quickly,” Dr. Syifa added.
