ABU DHABI, 19th December, 2020 (WAM) — The Abu Dhabi Investment Office, in collaboration with the Department of Municipalities and Transport, has announced the selection of a French consortium, including ‘EDF’ and ‘ENGIE’, to implement the second phase of a joint public-private project to illuminate the streets of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi with “L” technology and it is energy efficient.
The department signed a partnership agreement with “Nujoom”, the French consortium which presented a joint bid under the name of “Nujoom”, equally between the two companies, to carry out the project in Abu Dhabi.
The second phase of the project, which is part of the Abu Dhabi street lighting programme, involves the financing, supply, installation, operation and maintenance of 473,133 energy-efficient luminaires in the emirate, as the project will contribute to save up to 2,400 million kilowatt hours, which is equivalent to a reduction in consumption of 74% over the 12 years of the project concession.
Eng. Abdullah Abdulaziz Al Shamsi, Acting Director General, Abu Dhabi Investment Office, said: “The completion of the second phase of the LED street lighting tender embodies the strength of the partnership between the public and private sectors in Abu Dhabi, and our commitment to support public-private sector partnerships for the delivery of infrastructure projects Strategic Infrastructure The partnership with the Department of Municipalities and Transport will lead to a significant reduction in energy consumption in the emirate’s street lighting infrastructure, which will significantly contribute to the achievement of the UAE’s ambitious sustainability goals.”

The project was launched in accordance with the Abu Dhabi Public-Private Partnership Law, the Abu Dhabi Investment Bureau’s Partnership Project Guideline, and the Environmental, Social and Governance Standards Policy. The Department of Municipalities and Transport has signed the partnership agreement with EDF and ENGIE after a comprehensive three-stage evaluation of the tenders submitted by prequalified bidders, in which the selected French consortium has provided the best technical solutions, and the project will be implemented in five phases covering smaller geographic areas across Abu Dhabi, in order to ensure the highest standards of efficiency and sustainability.

The Abu Dhabi Investment Office is the government agency responsible for the management, facilitation, development and tender of all infrastructure projects implemented under public-private partnerships in Abu Dhabi, in line with its mandate to support investment in the sector private in the emirate.
The Department of Municipalities and Transport wishes to encourage investment in the emirate by weaving constructive partnerships with the private sector and facilitating the creation of projects in its field of expertise through cooperation with strategic partners to ensure integration and knowledge exchange.
