Elon Musk threatens to step down as CEO of Twitter over a poll he organized himself. Musk asked his followers if he should step down as head of the social media company. After more than thirteen million responses and about four hours to go, 56.6% of voters said yes.
So far, the majority of voters think he should step down. The poll on Musk remaining in charge of Twitter went online at 12:20 and will expire after 12:00. In the first fifteen minutes, one million Twitter users have already cast their votes.
In his tweet, Musk promises to respect the poll results. He did the same with previous statements. In November, for example, he sold $5 billion (€4.4 billion) of shares in his company Tesla, after asking his followers if he should sell 10 percent of his shares. The majority (57.9%) voted in favour.
In response to a tweet from a follower, Musk wrote that there is “no successor” ready for him in case the outcome is against him.

More and more criticism of Musk
Since Musk’s $44 billion takeover of Twitter, it has received a lot of flak. For example, he recently suspended journalists for, among other things Cnn in The New York Times work. According to Musk, reporters put his family in danger when they report—sometimes indirectly—on the whereabouts of his plane.
The Twitter CEO reinstated the accounts after also conducting a survey. In it, he asked users whether he should lift the suspension immediately or at a later date. Most Twitter users opted for the former.
The suspensions have drawn fierce criticism from Twitter. UN chief António Guterres said he was “deeply concerned”. Reporters Without Borders (RSF), an organization dedicated to press freedom, spoke of “a threat to democracy”. And media organizations and several countries also condemned the move.
Also, it was announced on Sunday that Twitter users will no longer be allowed to link to their profiles on other social media platforms, such as Mastodon, Facebook and Instagram. A reference that does not contain a link is also prohibited from now on.
