“We recognize that many of our users are active on other social media platforms. However, we will no longer allow free promotion of certain platforms of social networks on Twitter,” they began by saying on Twitter Support. Social networks such as Faceboook, Instagram or Mastodon have official profiles open on the bluebird social network and use them to provide official information, for example, when their systems suffer a significant collapse.
At the moment, Facebook or Instagram profiles are still active and links to these networks can still be posted, despite information provided by Twitter support. On the contrary, Mastodon was suspended on Thursday and this newspaper then verified that it was not possible to publish links to that social network.
The motivation given at the time by Elon Musk was that the links of that social network had been shared to spread the accounts that follow the position of his private jet in real time, profiles similar to those he had banned 24 hours earlier on Twitter. This was also the official version to suspend the accounts of journalists reporting on Twitter and Elon Musk, although the media outlets they work for have denied sharing the mogul’s position. The journalists’ accounts have already been restored.
For the moment, a minimum of interaction between the other platforms and Twitter will be allowed, even if not the better known ones that have been mentioned. “We still allow cross-posting from any social media platform,” which means users can still share links or usernames from networks other than those in the initial list in Tweets.
