World Cup 2022: Kylian Mbappé top scorer – cold consolation for France star

Kylian Mbappé missed his World Cup title defense in Qatar with France, but at least secured the Golden Boot as top scorer as a small consolation. The French superstar scored twice in Sunday’s final against Argentina (2-4 on penalties) to add to his six, seven and eight tournament goals. Mbappé thus surpassed even Argentine star Lionel Messi, who also scored twice in the final but only managed seven goals in the tournament. Prior to the final, both were top scorers with five goals each.

Mbappé also set a final record. The Frenchman, who previously scored in the 2018 World Cup final, is now the first player ever to score four goals in a final. In 2018 he had meanwhile scored 4: 1 against Croatia (final score: 4: 2).

At the 2018 World Cup in Russia, the Englishman Harry Kane won the cannon of top scorer with six goals ahead of the Portuguese Cristiano Ronaldo, the Belgian Romelu Lukaku and the two Frenchmen Antoine Griezmann and Kylian Mbappe (four goals each). The best goalscorer in the World Cup is the German Miroslav Klose (16 goals in 24 games) ahead of the Brazilian Ronaldo (15 goals in 19 games) and Gerd Müller (14 goals in 13 games).
