LaLiga openly criticizes and threatens to sue

On Friday, FIFA president Gianni Infantino announced a reform of the Club World Cup that would include an increase to 32 teams. La Liga has apparently been taken by surprise and is now threatening a lawsuit.

Infantino’s new Club World Cup kicks off in 2025, for the first time with 32 teams instead of six. At what point in the season the tournament will be played has not yet been determined.

The already obvious burden on professional footballers increases further. And that’s not all: Infantino has another tournament planned! “The plan is to use the March international window to organize friendly tournaments between four teams from different continents in even years. Events called ‘FIFA World Series’,” said the FIFA president.

Infantino has now received sharp criticism from Spain. In a statement, the association even announced legal action.

“FIFA only thinks of a small group of clubs and players, while in professional football there are many professional leagues, thousands of clubs and players who do not participate in these international competitions.”

Spicy: The statement also states that the Spanish professional league has not been informed of the Infantino reform!

“In light of these decisions, taken without consulting the parties directly concerned, (…) LaLiga announces that it will consider legal action to prevent the Club World Cup in the announced format.”
