Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced on Saturday a subsidy to the Greek parliament to arm households against high inflation.
The check is valid for a period of six months and can be used to make purchases at supermarkets and other food-selling businesses, such as bakeries and fishmongers. In total, the Greek government will release around 650 million euros. A single-member family can request a maximum of 220 euros per month. There is an additional amount of 100 euros for each additional family member. For large families, a maximum amount of 1,000 euros is applied.
“We are trying to help as many families as possible,” Prime Minister Mitsotakis said. The program is funded by excess taxes on the country’s refineries. The program benefits couples who earn up to 24,000 euros a year. There is a supplement of 5,000 euros per child. According to Mitsotakis, more than 85% of taxpayers are helped by the program.
Subsidies for electricity and gas will also continue. “In total, more than 8 million euros will be allocated nationally,” said the Prime Minister.
Inflation in Greece rose to 12% in September and fell to 9.1% in October.
