Police have arrested a man for animal cruelty after he allegedly poisoned around 20 fish at the Aventura mall.
Sanders Cannin, 30, who was charged with animal cruelty after poisoning a score of koi carp in a pond inside the Aventura mall, appeared in court today.
“At around 12:30 yesterday, officers responded to a call at the Aventura Shopping Center after a man put bleach and alcohol in a pond that held about 50 fish,” police said.
The police report adds that the defendant, after poisoning the fish, stroked them as they floated to the surface with difficulty breathing.
Cannin was arrested while trying to flee the mall, for which he also faces a charge of resisting arrest.
In total about 20 Koi died, generating a loss of about 25 thousand dollars for the place, since these harmonious animals are expensive and highly prized.

In court, the defendant’s mother appeared to ask the judge for an opportunity, claiming that her son has mental problems, for which the judge granted the defendant house arrest.
