Customs officials in Arcachon in southwestern France discovered and seized during an inspection 578 kg of cocaine worth 40 million euros, the French customs service and prosecutor’s office announced today, as reported from France Presse.
The two truck drivers – Bulgarian citizens – appeared before a judge to be accused of drug importation and trafficking.
The Public Prosecutor’s Office has asked for a precautionary custody order to be issued and specifies that the two can receive up to 10 years in prison.
The drug was discovered on Monday during a check on the A63 motorway between Bayonne and Bordeaux, customs and prosecutors said in two separate statements.
During the search with a specially trained dog, “the presence of 578 kg of cocaine was found, packed in parcels arranged on pallets among the legal load of majolica tiles,” the prosecutor said.
A total of 501 parcels of cocaine were counted among the pallets of tiles that the Bulgarian-registered truck was supposed to transport between Spain and the Netherlands, customs said.
A total of 7,000 euros in cash were found in the compartment of the truck and with one of the two drivers, the prosecutor announced, reports Bta.
