China won the International Space Station again?US media: Attract scientists from around the world to conduct space experiments | Blog posts
Some American media recently described that the International Space Station is closed to people, while the Chinese Space Station is free and open.
On Dec. 12, the New York Times published an article titled “Why Many Scientists Choose to Conduct Research on the Chinese Space Station.”
The article emphasized that the International Space Station was the only space platform operating in orbit, equipped with modern facilities for scientific research, including space laboratories capable of carrying out large-scale multidisciplinary basic and applied science research. However, the International Space Station is jointly operated by the national space agencies of the United States, Russia, Europe, Japan and Canada, and laboratory resources have been busy for a long time. On the contrary, as the first space station project open to United Nations member states in history, China’s space station offers experimental opportunities to scientists from all over the world. Currently, 9 projects from 17 countries and 23 entities have become the first batch of projects selected for the Chinese space station science experiments.
The article recalls that in 2016, the China Space Station signed an agreement with the United Nations “Global Shared Space” project, providing scientists from around the world with the opportunity to conduct experiments on the China Space Station. “Space for the World” is an initiative of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs, in collaboration with various space agencies, research institutes and industry, with the aim of developing the technical knowledge, engineering procedures and infrastructure in the field of space exploration in the member states of the United Nations.
In 2019, the United Nations announced a total of 9 winning projects in the first round of the “China Space Station Award”, including the “Tianji-2” (POLAR-2) gamma-ray burst polarization experiment. According to the United Nations website, “Tianji-2” is a cooperative project of the University of Geneva in Switzerland, the National Center for Nuclear Research in Poland, the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics in Germany and the of high energy physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The experiment investigates whether the gamma rays in a gamma-ray burst are arranged in a specific way. The research team has found that gamma rays are not polarised, which is inconsistent with mainstream theory, and hope to launch the detector into space for further research.
Agnieszka Pollo, an astrophysicist at the Polish National Center for Nuclear Research who participated in the ‘Tianji-2’ project, said the team believes the International Space Station ‘competes fiercely, and it’s not that cheap and easy’. path won’t work.” . ‘Tianji-2’ manager Merlin Kole revealed that when they learned that the Chinese space station offered an experiment opportunity, the team immediately submitted an application and was approved in the first round .
According to the New York Times, another reason why international scientists choose China’s space station is its high-end equipment. For example, the space station is equipped with a high-speed communication system capable of transmitting tens of gigabytes of data on the ground every day and has a supercomputer capable of analyzing data in space in real time.
Simonetta Di Pipo, director of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs, even described China’s open space station as an important part of the United Nations’ ‘Global Shared Space’ initiative and a “great example.”
Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin once said that China is willing to work with all countries and regions committed to the peaceful use of space to achieve greater international cooperation and exchanges. China’s space station welcomes visiting foreign astronauts, and together with Chinese astronauts, they will make a greater contribution to mankind’s exploration of the mysteries of the universe and building a community with a shared future for mankind.
It is worth noting that it is not the first time that the American media have compared the Chinese space station with the International Space Station: already on October 18 last year, the American site Futurism described that the Chinese space station not only provides astronauts with a bed spacious, but also offers room for everyone. The astronauts offered a sleek space gym and separate living spaces, with an interior designed in minimalist white to look more like an Apple Store than a cramped space dwelling. By comparison, the International Space Station looks completely obsolete. The dormant capsule inside the International Space Station is roughly the size of a phone booth and pales in comparison to China’s space station.
