Saudi media woman raises controversy by tweeting about ‘Battle of Poitiers’ after Morocco loses to France, and Qatari sheikh responds

Dubai, United Arab Emirates (CNN) – Saudi media outlet Iman Al-Hamoud has sparked an interaction among activists on social media after a tweet he posted commenting on the Moroccan team’s loss to France in the World Cup semifinals 2022 in Qatar.

Al-Hamoud said in his tweet: “The Fatah Al-Andalus group.. We are waiting for your projections on yesterday’s ‘Battle of Poitiers’.. History repeats itself here.. Isn’t it? Or your tongues have been swallowed by birds? How small are your minds to mix religion and history with a noble game like football!!”

For her part, the Sheikh of Qatar, Maryam Al Thani, responded to Al-Hamoud with a tweet in which she said: “Because you wrote the tweet in Arabic, the ‘Battle of Poitiers’ is called ‘The Martyrs’ Court’ … With conclusive evidence, these are the ones who have brought religion and politics into the ‘noble game’.”

For his part, Abd al-Rahman bin Saud commented on a tweet in which he said, “Our sister, Iman, immigrated to France and thinks she is French. Is the battle of Poitiers called the ‘martyrs’ court’ in Ghoug?” The proximity of one of your most famous cities.. to violate your land and your honour, under the pretext of “evangelization”.. Will you call the battle with the name of “martyrs’ court”?!

Interestingly, Al-Hamoud previously sparked controversy and interaction among social media activists in Saudi Arabia in 2019 after she was invited by the Misk Charitable Foundation to attend the UNESCO soiree, which prompted the head of the Misk Initiatives Center and the director of the private cabinet of the Saudi crown prince, Badr Al-Asaker, to publish a tweet in which he apologized for the incident, calling it an “individual error”.
