High Court Malaysia ordered that the government and three other parties, including the former prime minister’s adviser (PM) Najib Razakto pay compensation of 5 million Ringgit (Rp 17.6 billion) to the family of the Mongolian model, the deceased Altantuya Shaariibuukilled in 2006.
As reported The starFriday (16/12/2022), The Malaysian High Court decision was handed down on Friday (16/12) morning local time, in a lawsuit filed by the Altantuya family since 2007. The lawsuit seeks compensation of 100 million Ringgit (RP 353 billion).
Civil Court Judge Vazeer Alam Mydin Meera in his ruling said that the Altantuya family managed to prove their claims against the Malaysian government, a political analyst named Abdul Razak Baginda and two former policemen named Sirul Azhar Umar and Azilah Hadri .
The lawsuit was filed on 4 June 2007 by Altantuya’s parents – Dr. Shaariibuu Setev and Altantsetseg Sanjaa – along with their grandsons named Mungunshagai Bayarjargal and Altanshagai Munkhtulga, against the four defendants namely the Malaysian Government, Abdul Razak and the two ex-cops.
The judge’s decision upholding the lawsuit was only approved this week, or about 15 years later.
In their lawsuit, the family argued that Altantuya’s death had left them with mental shock and psychological trauma. The lawsuit seeks compensation in addition to exemplary damage and aggravated damage.
A total of 26 eyewitnesses were presented on the plaintiff’s side, including his father and eldest son Altantuya, in the trial which only started in 2019. The Malaysian government presented three witnesses, while Abdul Razak refused to testify at the trial.
