David Ferrer named new Davis Cup captain

The Royal Spanish Tennis Federation (RFET) announced today the appointment of David Ferrer as the new team captain Davis Cup for the next three seasons. The man from Alicante takes over Sergio Bruguerawho has led the Spanish team for the past four years.

David Ferrer will be presented next Monday, December 19 at the headquarters of Higher Sports Council (CSD). The former Alicante player left professional tennis in May 2019 after a career in which he managed to win 27 titles in 52 finals played.

In addition, David Ferrer played 63 Grand Slams and managed to stay at the top of the ATP world rankings for 7 years, in which he reached number 3 in 2013.

David Ferrer also has a lot of experience in the Davis Cupcompetition that won three times as a player (2008, 2009 and 2011). He also played in the 2012 final.

His most outstanding victory was achieved in 2013 when he won the Masters of Paris 1,000. In that same season Ferrer reached the final of Roland Garros, but Rafael Nadal fell. In the first of his 7 participations in the 2007 Masters Cup, he also reached the final against the Swiss Roger Federer.

The RFET communicated on December 12 the agreement reached with Sergi Bruguera to leave the captain’s armband, after the Spanish team was eliminated against Croatia in the quarterfinals of the Davis Cup 2022 in which Canada won the title against the ‘Australia.

With Bruguera at the helm, Spain won their sixth bowl of 2019.
