Justice minister pushes to ban necrophilia

ANP extension

ANNOUNCEMENTS

The government is pushing to ban necrophilia. Earlier this month, the Scientific Research and Documentation Center (WODC) recommended it. And Minister Yesilgöz told the House of Representatives this afternoon that he feels in favor of adopting this council.

The Minister of Justice and Security will take the plunge in the spring. Then he will draw up a policy memorandum on the matter. But in response to questions from PVV, CDA and VVD, among others, he has already hinted that sexual acts with the bodies of the deceased should also be explicitly punished as far as she is concerned.

There is currently no specific legal article against necrophilia in the Netherlands and a dead body is considered an object and not a deceased person. According to the House, this should change.

PVV deputy Helder spoke of “a serious violation of the integrity of the deceased”. He stressed that it is a criminal offense in other Western countries such as Germany, France, England and the United States and asked the minister to ensure that this also happens in the Netherlands.

Earlier this month, the WODC said in its advisory that the right to protection of bodily integrity and privacy must continue to apply even after death.

The advice was commissioned by Yesilgöz’s predecessor Grapperhaus, who reported at the time that necrophilia is rare and usually in combination with murder or manslaughter, for which the perpetrators are prosecuted.
