French police have arrested a group of far-right people who planned to attack Moroccan fans on the famous Champs-Elysées after France’s victory over Morocco in the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup on Wednesday.
France beat Morocco with two free goals, setting the rendezvous with Argentina in the final match, while Morocco will play Croatia for the bronze medal.
A spokeswoman for the French police told the German news agency (Dpa) that 266 people have been arrested after violence across the country, including 167 in the French capital, Paris.
Prosecutors in Paris have revealed that 40 far-right people have been arrested, some of them carrying edged weapons.
Reports said the defendants had intended to confront Moroccan fans, as they aimed to go to the famous Champs-Elysées, where France’s victory celebrations took place.
