Tehran (AFP) – Iran announced on Wednesday that International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) officials would visit Tehran in the coming days to remove the “mystery” surrounding allegations of covert nuclear activities.
For months, the International Atomic Energy Agency has been asking Tehran to explain the presence of nuclear material in three unauthorized sites.
The discovery of traces of nuclear materials in unauthorized sites has exacerbated the complications that prevent the relaunch of the agreement concluded in 2015 between the major powers and Iran on its nuclear program, in the balance since 2018 due to Washington’s withdrawal during the was by Donald Trump, then President of the United States.
The head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, Mohammad Eslami, told reporters in Tehran that “officials of the agency will visit Tehran in the coming days”.
“Our communication with the agency continues and we hope we can make real progress with the agency to overcome hurdles and ambiguities and move forward,” he added.
A delegation from the agency had planned to visit Tehran last month, but the visit did not take place after the agency’s board denounced Tehran’s lack of cooperation and failure to provide “technically reliable” answers.
The agency felt it was unable to guarantee the tranquility of Tehran’s nuclear program.
On Friday, an Islamist said traces of the enriched uranium found in Iran had been smuggled into the country from abroad.
The 2015 deal provides for the easing of sanctions against Iran in exchange for limiting its nuclear program, to prevent it from secretly developing a nuclear bomb, knowing that the Islamic Republic has always denied wanting to achieve this goal.
