Rijkswaterstaat lowered the water in Amsterdam’s canals by seven centimeters this afternoon, especially for Karianne’s houseboat on the Geldersekade. For example, the ark fit just under the Bantammer Bridge. The houseboat had to be moved due to work on the quay walls.
It’s an unscrupulous journey. Karianne’s houseboat will be across the bridge, a few hundred yards away. But for that trip, Rijkswaterstaat pumped 2700 million liters of water from Amsterdam’s canals into the sea. “It’s five times the Arena is full,” says Marco Kooiman, who works for Council’s Bridges and Quay Walls program. “This can be done by opening the sluice gates at IJmuiden. Literally flush. And if there really is a very low tide, it doesn’t even cost energy.”
The houseboat was also weighed down, even with dumpsters full of water. It’s a bit of trial and error, but Karianne’s house slips quite smoothly under the bridge. Karianne has lived on the ark at the Geldersekade for 24 years. She watches with pain in her heart as her house slides under the bridge. “It’s not the same Geldersekade there as it is here. And even if we come back, everything simply has to go. The terrace that has been here for a long time is gone, we obviously enjoyed living on it.”
Karianne must have been on the “wrong” side of the bridge for at least 2 years. She then she goes back to her old place of hers. And then immediately comes a new ark. And maybe that’s not a bad idea. Because after moving under the bridge, a leak has arisen. The leak was quickly closed, but firefighters had to show up to empty the houseboat again.
