‘On the Train from Chicago to California’ on TV: Here’s What ‘With the ‘West Wind’ Across America’ is About

The Chicago to San Francisco tour is the longest continuous train ride that can be done in the United States. The route from the time of the settlement of America is legendary. The film shows the journey with the “California Zephyr”, the “California West Wind”. There are spectacular views and landscaped vistas to admire. The stories of fellow travelers and those who live on the tracks are also told. “It was the first time in my life that I took the train – I had no idea how beautiful such a journey was!” Susanne, 50, is exhausted but enthusiastic. You just completed the tour. It took almost three days. You can of course just fly in and get there easily in four and a half hours. Most Americans do too. Because the railroad, which once made settlement in the western United States possible, has been all but forgotten as a means of everyday transportation. But it works once again a day: the “California Zephyr”. There are several hundred passengers on board. Most of them – like Susanne – indulge in this very special travel experience for the first time. It was the construction of this railroad line that brought countless European immigrants to their new American homeland in the 19th century. Some passengers still recall this past today: Rail travel is especially popular among Mennonites and Amish, adherents of religious communities that reject many modern technological advances. Planes and cars are taboo for them. However, the train is allowed and many of them use it when travelling. But all others who take on the three-day train adventure will also be richly rewarded: The journey in the observation carriage offers splendid panoramas – of the endless expanses of Nebraska, the grandiose canyons of Colorado, the salt deserts of Utah and the Wild West villages of Nevada. Those who arrive in San Francisco, California, a little wrinkled from the nights in the cramped sleeping cars and shaken by the enormous rumble on the old tracks, have a special experience behind them. The train crosses an America that has kept much of the soul of pioneering times away from the usual tourist routes. (Source: 3sat, broadcast by FUNKE program magazines)
