After an eleven-game hitting streak, the New Jersey Devils’ road streak came to an end.
The team with the Swiss Nico Hischier, Jonas Siegenthaler and Akira Schmid lost 4-3 at the New York Rangers after extra time. 23-year-old Czech Filip Chytil decided the game with the winning goal for Rangers after 135 seconds of extra time.
The New Jersey Devils are falling short of tying the NHL record set by the Detroit Red Wings (2005-06 season) and the Minnesota Wild (2014-15) by winning 12 games on the road. New Jersey lost a road game for the first time since the first game of the season on October 14 in Philadelphia (5-2).
Hischier’s goal and Siegenthaler’s penalty
In the derby against the New York Rangers things went well for New Jersey for a long time. Nico Hischier gave the Devils an early lead when he deflected an untenable shot by Jonas Siegenthaler. New Jersey led 2–0 after just five minutes. After 33 minutes, however, the game got out of hand for the visiting team at Madison Square Garden. Jack Hughes missed the 4:1 with a penalty, 37 seconds later Jonas Siegenthaler had to go to the penalty box, and another 38 seconds later the New York Rangers had tied the game at 3:3. The goals from 1:3 to 3:3 reach the Rangers in seven seconds.
The Devils lost a derby for the second time in three days after beating the New York Islanders 4-6 at home. But: “There’s no need to panic,” says Captain Nico Hischier. “Derbies sometimes get crazy. The match was intense and fought right up to the end. We had many chances to win. We have to bear the two defeats and focus on the next matches.”
In the Metropolitan Division, the New Jersey Devils continue to lead the Pittsburgh Penguins by six points.
A 0-1 loss after overtime also sent the Nashville Predators (Roman Josi, Roman Niederreiter) back to St. Louis. Nashville is four points out of the Western Conference playoffs after one-third of the season.
