The recent videos of the Dead Space remake have highlighted a particular aspect of this EA Motive project: the female characters have been redesigned, aged and less attractive in at least two main ways.
The question that mainly arose with video showing the first 18 minutes of gameplay, was immediately picked up by several fans and enthusiasts of the series. Particularly striking is the change made to Nicole Brennan, the beloved of the protagonist Isaac Clarke and the one who informs us that she has pushed our hero to pilot the USG Ishimura.
Nicole has been significantly changed in Dead Space Remake from the original version, featuring a significantly older woman than before.
The new image is said to no longer match the character: Nicole’s age is not officially known, but many think she is around 39, given her role, past activities and the fact that Isaac is also in his 40s.
If that’s the case, then some “aging” from the youthful look of the original may make sense, even if in reality the new Nicole looks significantly older. In any case, this has obviously caused controversy over the rethinking of female models, which happens quite often in modern games or remakes.
Then comes the image of Kendra Daniels, the agent who accompanies Isaac at the beginning of Dead Space: she too appears very different in the remake, according to various users, much less “feminine” and “curvy” than the original version.
Beyond the aesthetic tastes and the actual annoyance that great enthusiasts could experience in the face of a certain distortion of certain features (Nicole in particular is in fact very different from the original), there is no shortage of theories according to which these modifications are made to follow a feminist “agenda”. On the other hand, it must be said that even Nicole’s initial vision is rather vague, given the clear restyling that she has already undergone from Chapter 1 to Dead Space 2.
