Nobel prizes awarded: “Holding war criminals accountable”

This year’s Nobel Prize winners were honored at ceremonies in Oslo and Stockholm. Medals were awarded to ten men, two women and two organizations.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee presented the Nobel Peace Prize to the head of the Ukrainian Center for Civil Liberties, Olexandra Matviychuk, at Oslo City Hall.

He called for Vladimir Putin to be punished: “We must break the cycle of impunity. We must establish an international tribunal and hold Putin and Lukashenko and other war criminals accountable, not only to Ukrainians but also to other nations of the world.”

Another human rights organization was awarded Memorial from Russia. Almost a year ago, the Russian Supreme Court ordered the dissolution of the umbrella organization Memorial International because it was classified as a “foreign agent”.

Like Memorial, imprisoned Belarusian lawyer Ales Byalyatski was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his defense of essential civil rights.

Since Byalyatsky was imprisoned in Belarus for one and a half years, his wife Natalya Pinchuk received the award.
