“If things go wrong, it can go terribly wrong,” Stoltenberg said in an interview with Norwegian broadcaster NRK.
“There is a terrible war in Ukraine. It is also a war that could become a full-fledged war that would turn into a major war between NATO and Russia. We work every day to prevent this,” said the NATO leader.
Stoltenberg said in an interview that “there is no doubt that a full-fledged war is possible.” It is important, he added, to prevent a conflict “involving multiple countries in Europe and becoming a full-blown war in Europe”.
The Kremlin has repeatedly accused NATO countries of becoming parties to the conflict, supplying Ukraine with weapons, training its soldiers and providing military intelligence for attacks on Russian forces.
On Friday, Russian President Vladimir Putin, in a video conference with the heads of the defense and security forces of several post-Soviet countries, once again accused Western countries of using Ukraine as a tool against Russia.
“For many years, the West has shamelessly exploited and drained its resources, promoted genocide and terror in the Donbass, and practically turned the country into a colony. Now they are cynically using the Ukrainian people as cannon fodder, as a battering ram against Russia by continuing to supply Ukraine with weapons and ammunition, sending mercenaries and pushing it on a suicidal path,” Putin said.
Ukrainians insist they are fighting for freedom against an unwelcome invader and aggressor.
