Cody Gakpo it almost looks united Manchester United last summer. Now Gakpo is waiting for a second chance.
Gakpo became the target of many big European clubs after scoring 21 goals and 15 assists combined PSV-Eindhoven last season. His ability to play as an attacking midfielder and striker is an asset.
Manchester United then targeted Gakpo to replace Cristiano Ronaldo, who was speculated to be leaving at the time. Besides MU, there are also Leeds United and Southampton.
At that time the price of Gakpo was not that high, it is estimated not to exceed 50 million euros. However, in the process, MU instead picked another Dutch League player, Antony, from Ajax Amsterdam.
To bring Antonio, MU had to spend almost 100 million euros. When Antony was still fluctuating in performance, Gakpo actually pulled with PSV.
His failure to move to MU was used as a trigger to make 13 goals and 17 assists in the 2022/2023 season. He continued that performance for the Netherlands national team at the 2022 World Cup with a three-goal tally.
Aside from the failed transfer, it seems Gakpo was also motivated by PSV Eindhoven’s elimination in the Champions League playoffs at the hands of Rangers FC.
“I learned a lot (from that rough patch). I actually wanted to achieve a different result. But what happened happened,” Gakpo told NRC extension.
“For example, when you want to join PSV from RKC, but fail. Obviously you feel panicked.”
“I was thinking about going to Manchester United, but unfortunately it didn’t happen. I don’t remember why. I started to have doubts. Then Leeds United came, should I go there?”
With Ronaldo’s farewell, the possibility opens up again for Gakpo to be able to move to Old Trafford. Accidental Cody Gakpo mentioned again in the sights of the Red Devils.
“Now I’m just waiting. I haven’t heard of any offers from Manchester United. I’ll think about it carefully when it’s available. I’ll pray when I make a decision later.”
