Since November, a rather exceptional little Thai restaurant has been set up on rue Tiergarten next to the train station. Inspired by these small Thai night markets where you can eat at any time, this new neighborhood cafeteria offers the best of this country’s cuisines and streets with its exceptional food culture. The street food Thai has a new ambassador and it’s one of our favorites of the year – we present to you Like this Thai and the French-Thai couple who there create.
We leave for Southeast Asia, heading to Thailand. We don’t go there for its exceptional flora or fauna, nor for the beauty of its landscapes, but for his greatest wealth: knows gastronomy.
Marriages of unique flavours, sensational fruit and vegetables, broths and sauces that transport us and a decoration as if we were there: the unbearable expression “We took a one-way ticket to Thailand” find real meaning here.
Welcome a piece of Thailand exported to Strasbourg thanks to Sébastien e I love it, a couple determined to propose genuine dishes, rich in flavours, which respect the culinary identity of this country which continues to inspire chefs around the world.
An atmosphere and decor that takes us to the heart of the Thai night markets
Metal tables and stools, corrugated jail on the walls, neon lights and a good smell of toasted bread: Like this Thaï has gone to great lengths in the interior design of his restaurant.
In this small canteen with an open kitchen, we are no longer really in Strasbourg, but in a covered market in Bangkok, Chiang Mai you hate phuket.
These markets, these street restaurants, these are meeting points dedicated to street food where Thais meet day and night to eat pad thai, chicken with cashew nuts, drink a beer or play cards before resuming their activities.
This special, authentic and timeless atmosphere that we love when we go to Thailand, it all comes together in a small restaurant that is as simple as it is surprising.
And if we take a closer look, we realize that even the decoration is authentic. Tables, chairs, signs, famous port-90s napkins, boxes covered and uniform cooking utensils : nearly everything comes from the country and has been sourced locally.
With the help of interior designer Fanny papillaea lot of imagination and dozens of hours spent hunting for objects in the markets of this country at the end of the worlda real door to elsewhere has opened and it works surprisingly well.
Those who have been to Thailand you will find all the codes of the Street foodfrom the kitchen to the music we listen to there, and whoever has never ventured there will have us a very accurate overview of these little frequented restaurants that you meet at every street corner.
A story of family, conversion and independence
Chez Like this Thai is I love it (alias Gameto pronounce Kem) leading the dance in the kitchen. Originally from Thailand, she met Sébastien in Paris, by chance in a restaurant.
After years of romance between the French capital and Thailand, the two young 35-year-old parents have decided to leave their respective jobs and return to Alsace, Sébastien’s hometown, to open their own business.
After struggling for a year to find the right place for them, they found this place (former worlds‘) setting up an independent restaurant there, simple and full of goodness vibrations, a case that is quite similar to them.
After renovating the restaurant from floor to ceiling, including the toilets, after installing an open kitchen in addition to the existing one to be closer to customers, are proud to open this canteen where foodie(And)s de all walks of life come to taste the flavors so specific to this country that often marks the spirits.
Tasty cuisine, respecting the richness of Thai cuisine
You got it, in the menu, we will find a short menu that represents the very essence of Thai cuisine: wok, marinated and grilled meats, stews and exotic saladswith nice proposals that will surprise even insiders.
Pad Thai to die for concocted in the rules of art, rice noodles sauteed with vegetables and gravy oysterwith chicken or prawns, deliciously spiced salads, marinated and grilled meat on Japanese barbecue, pork knuckle marinated and confit for several hours in a blend of spices, homemade sauces, boiled side dishes, nothing is left to chance and each dish has its own taste markers.
To get to the end of things, Game and Sébastien wanted to work on each dish using all the ingredients present in the original recipes: they are therefore not westernized at all, therefore not distorted.
We find these famous marriages of flavors that require long preparations upstream, the sauces and marinades are homemade, even the desserts, different infusion and cooking techniques are needed for the same dish. In short, here, we prefer to do complicated when you can make it simple, and it’s their credit since the result is there.
Sébastien pretty much sums up his wife’s work : “It went to the end of things and we thought of all the details so that everyone feels in Thailand, e Good safethe quoted engaging is essential. In fact, we’ve done everything, that’s why people come the first time because it’s beautiful and they come back a second time because it’s beautiful”.
It’s hard to hide our excitement about the opening of this new restaurant. We like the decoration, the immersion in this country at the end of the world, we like the atmosphere and the flavors that emerge, we like the slightly raw side of these markets where you can eat on the go for a few euros, and above all : we love this kitchenboth simple and delightfully complex that is 9,390 kilometers away from making a case for it.
