For once, the Copa America could be attended by just a few CONCACAF teams, including Canada, and the United States could even play a bigger role in 2024 by hosting the tournament.
This event is usually a classic for South American nations, but a few exceptions over the years have allowed North American countries to participate. Looking for big challenges before hosting the 2026 World Cup in their lands, Canada, the United States and Mexico could join the Copa America.
Americans would be prime candidates for the organization, according to FOX Sports MX. The contest has been orphaned since Ecuador decided to withdraw its candidacy.
Holding the event in the US could attract lucrative business.
The two most recent tournaments were held in Brazil, in 2019 and 2021. In 2016, however, the Copa America celebrated its centenary edition in the United States, in the presence of five other CONCACAF nations, namely Mexico, Jamaica, Costa Rica , Panama and Haiti.
In history, Mexico has made nine Copa America appearances, while the United States has appeared three times. Canada has never taken part in this CONMEBOL competition.
With this tournament, CONCACAF members will participate in the Nations League and the Gold Cup in 2023. The Maple Leaf, eliminated in the group stage of the World Cup in Qatar, will play its next matches on March 25 and 28 next, against Curaçao and Honduras.
