World’s Largest Chipmaker Invests $40 Billion in US | Economy

The Taiwanese chipmaker TSMC extension will build two factories in the United States. The arrival of the factories is worth 40 billion dollars (38 billion euros), one of the largest foreign investments in American history. The news comes at a time of fierce competition for chips around the world.

The two factories must be located in the state of Arizona. The first should open in 2024, the second two years later. According to the Taiwanese company, the investment will create 10,000 new jobs, of which 4,500 at TSMC itself and the rest at suppliers. US President Joe Biden said he was very pleased with the investment.

TSMC is the world’s largest chip maker, measured by market capitalization. The new investment will be followed with interest by the Dutch chipper manufacturer ASML. The Eindhoven company is an important supplier for TSMC.

There is a lot of competition for chips all over the world. During the corona pandemic, there was a serious shortage, which had consequences, among other things, for the automotive industry. The United States and Europe want to increase chip production in their region and have allocated a lot of money for this.

The arrival of the two plants in Arizona also strengthens the bond between Taiwan and the United States. China would like to annex Taiwan, because it sees the country as a renegade province. The United States wants Taiwan to remain independent.
