New York City is an assault on the senses: exciting, fast-paced, flamboyant, loud. But the city also has surprisingly quiet sides. For example, east of the East River in the trendy Brooklyn Heights neighborhood, which is popular with celebrities.
“Do you notice anything?” asks Gary Walther, looking through his glasses with excitement. Does he mean the missing skyscrapers? “There is no background noise.” Indeed. He is incredibly silent. No honking cabs, wailing sirens, or pounding subways.
