Emirates News Agency – Joint statement by Quartet and Troika on Sudan

ABU DHABI, December 5, WAM/ Quartet and Troika countries (United Arab Emirates, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, United Kingdom, United States of America and Kingdom of Norway) welcome agreement on an agreement in principle political framework among political parties in Sudan, which constitutes an important step towards building a government with civilian leadership, and to clarify the constitutional provisions that will guide the Republic of Sudan during a transitional period which will culminate in the organization of elections.
The Quartet and Troika commend the parties’ efforts to mobilize support for this large-scale framework agreement from Sudanese political actors and call for a full and continued dialogue on various important issues and cooperation to build Sudan’s future.
The Quartet and Troika countries urge effective personalities in Sudan to engage in this dialogue urgently and in good faith, and recommend the declaration of the clear military component to step away from the political process and cooperate constructively for the success of the existing dialogue.
The Quartet and Troika countries call on parties in Sudan to prioritize national interest over narrow political objectives.
These countries also fully support the tripartite mechanism (the United Nations Integrated Mission in Support of Transition in Sudan “UNITAMS”, the African Union and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development “IGAD”) and its efforts to facilitate these negotiations, and they invite all parties to do the same.
The Quartet and Troika countries support this Sudan-led process and denounce the abusers who aim to narrow the political horizon and undermine Sudan’s stability and democratic transition. Stresses that this coordinated effort to end negotiations and urgently reach an agreement to build a government with civilian leadership is important to address the emergency political, economic, security and humanitarian challenges facing Sudan, to resume assistance international development and to strengthen cooperation between the Government of the Republic of the Sudan and international partners.
The Quartet and Troika underline the importance of working with partners to coordinate critical economic support for a democratic government with civilian leadership, which helps address the challenges faced by the Sudanese people.
