This is another very sad story.
According to several media outlets including Chosun Ilbo, three North Korean teenagers were recently publicly executed for watching and sharing k-dramas.
Since December 2020, a North Korean law formally bans the consumption of any audiovisual content originating from South Korea. It is even considered a state crime.
Until now, the death penalty was not applied to minors, but it seems that things have changed. In fact, three teenagers have just been executed for it.
The three boys lived in the city of Hyesan, a city near the border between North Korea and China. They were watching multiple episodes of k-dramas and American series and ended up getting caught sharing them with relatives.
Despite the risk, a survey by Unification Media Group tells us that 96% of North Koreans surveyed have already seen famous dramas like “Squid Game” or “Crash Landing on You”.
