It’s on the map

On the Aescher there are the typical dishes of mountain inns such as barley soup, platters or sausage and cheese salad. You can also order boiled sausages or cheese buns, both typical Appenzell specialities. The hosts also offer less everyday fare, with buttermilk cravings and prime rib.

particularity

The Aescher mountain restaurant is one of the oldest mountain inns in Switzerland. It has existed since 1860. Today the place is a tourist magnet: the inn built next to the rock is one of the most popular photo subjects in Appenzellerland. Not least thanks to prominent visitors such as Roger Federer, it has become even better known.

When American actor Ashton Kutcher posted a photo of the Aescher on his Facebook page in 2015, it had a major impact on Appenzellerland.

How to get to the restaurant

The restaurant can only be reached on foot. For example via the mountain hiking trail from Wasserauen. The best way to get to Wasserauen is with the Appenzellerbahn. There is also a limited number of parking spaces. The hike from Seealpsee to Aescher should not be underestimated. The trail is exposed and accidents happen all the time along the way.

The route from the top station of the Ebenalp cable car is shorter. It takes about 20 minutes downhill and further through the Wildkirchli cave to the restaurant.
