The head of the Lebanese interim government, Najib Mikati, confirmed that the House of Representatives should hold continuous and open meetings to elect a president of the country as soon as possible, adding that every day that passes without electing a president is a great loss for the country and for the Lebanese citizen.
Mikati declared – in an interview with the media, Engy Al-Qadi, presenter of the “Special Dialogue” program on the “Cairo News” channel this evening, Sunday – that unfortunately there is no longer respect for the constitutional deadlines which imposed the election of a president before the mandate of former president Michel Aoun What happened is that the election did not take place, and this is not the first time.
Mikati added that when the filibuster policy started after 2005, every time a president is elected, there is a gap, and this happened in the elections between presidents Emile Lahoud and Michel Suleiman, since the filibuster is lasted about 8 months, and between presidents Michel Suleiman and Michel Aoun for more than two years and six months.
He indicated that a president for the Lebanese Republic should be elected as soon as possible, stressing that when former president Michel Aoun was elected, there was no consensus among political forces to elect him.
He underlined that at the moment there are no luxuries for Lebanon and that the country is going through an exceptional moment, for this reason it is necessary to immediately elect a president, form a government that carries out its external contacts and work on the necessary reforms that Lebanon has need.
