Pelé is responding well to treatment for a respiratory infection, his hospital in Brazil said in a statement.
Earlier in the day, Folha de Sao Paulo newspaper reported that the 82-year-old (real name Edson Arantes do Nascimento) was in palliative care after failing to respond to chemotherapy for his cancer.
“Edson Arantes do Nascimento was admitted to Israel’s Albert Einstein Hospital last Tuesday (29) for a reevaluation of his chemotherapy for colon cancer, diagnosed in September 2021,” the statement said.
“He is still being treated and his health is stable. She is responding well to treatment for a respiratory infection and it hasn’t changed in the last 24 hours.”
Pele also posted an update about his health on his Instagram account.
“My friends, I want to keep everyone calm and positive,” she wrote. “I am strong, full of hope and following my treatment as usual. I would like to thank all the medical and nursing team for the care I have received.
“I have great faith in God and every message of love I receive from you around the world energizes me. And also see Brazil at the World Cup!
“Thanks for everything.”
