Ebrard accelerates the pace in the presidential succession race

Marcelo Ebrard took another step this Saturday in his determined commitment to become Morena’s candidate for the 2024 presidential election. In an act in Mexico City he gathered the 10,000 representatives of his campaign who will defend his candidacy in the election of 300 districts in view of the internal poll of Morena which must decree the final candidate. The chancellor also announced that in January he will start a tour that will reach all corners of the country asking for votes for his party’s internal process.

“Let’s go, aren’t we going?” Ebrard harangued during the act which was joined by, among others, Santiago Nieto, until last November head of the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU), Prosecutor Hidalgo, senators, deputies and mayors. The event had a clear electoral tone, even though the elections are still almost two years away and the pre-campaign hasn’t even started.

The details of the internal vote with the poll method foreseen for next year remain to be defined. Morena has already passed the first test in September with the renewal of its governing bodies, a process which highlighted the divisions and internal struggles that threaten the formation and which were already experienced two years ago with the elections to elect its current president, Mario Delgado.

The party, which has a large majority in parliament and governs a third of the United States, faces its most difficult challenge: preparing and consolidating the post-Andrés Manuel López Obrador phase. Born just over a decade ago in the image and likeness of its leader, the transition of the Morenista leadership appears crucial for the future of the Mexican political scene. Indeed, since the middle of last year, much of the public debate has focused on Morena’s internal life and succession, while the opposition alliance is still trying to pick up the pace after its defeat in 2018.

In pools, known as the game of caps, On several occasions, López Obrador has placed the head of Mexican diplomacy, the head of government of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum, or the secretary of the interior, Adán Augusto López. They are joined by the group leader in the Senate, Ricardo Monreal, who has been immersed for months in an internal battle with the party leadership and the president himself, whom he accuses of neglecting him in front of the other candidates. Monreal announced that he is also considering leaving the party to join the opposition alliance PRI, PAN and PRD as a presidential candidate.

However, Ebrard and Sheinbaum are the favorites in all polls, with an advantage in almost all of them over the capital’s head of government. Sources from the Ebrard team underline that the relevance of this Saturday’s act is the formation of “its own and independent structure to go all the way in the quest to win the Morena poll”.

The foreign minister had already announced the hard core of his electoral campaign during an act in Guadalajara in June. It is chaired by Senator Malú Micher of Guanajuato, president of the Commission for Gender Equality, and is made up of more than 300 positions from the movement. “We will listen, we will propose, we will organize and we will keep the advantages in all the polls,” Ebrard defended then, as well as recalling that the president himself had already pointed this out to him five times. “There has been a lot of speculation: if today’s meeting is uncovered, what is the goal. Let me tell you something: the president has already discovered me five times this morning.”
