According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple has renamed the operating system for its mixed reality headset to “xrOS” instead of “realityOS.”

The iPhone maker plans to introduce the headset as early as next year. Along with a custom operating system (xrOS) and an app store for third-party software like iOS and macOS.

Apple’s focus on mixed reality glasses comes after either Facebook or Meta gambled on the world of Metaverse and is currently investing a lot of money to build this parallel world.

The company with the largest market capitalization in the world is also looking to grow its revenue through the wearables sector. This division contributed $41.2 billion in sales last year.

Gorman noted that the mixed reality operating system will deliver new versions of core applications.

This will include messages and maps, and work with SDKs so developers can build their own apps and games.
