Polio outbreak, Ministry of Health launches free injection vaccine program in 3 provinces

Jakarta, CNNI Indonesia

The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) will give two injections polio vaccine (IPV) free for children in 2023. This switch started earlier in DKI Jakarta, Banten and West Java provinces, from Thursday (1/12/2022).

Head of the Communications and Public Service Office Ministry of Health, Siti Nadia Tarmizi, ensured the administration of two free injections of polio vaccine. This is because polio immunization has been routinely given to children for a long time.

“Pio immunization, which is really a routine immunization given to children, has long been a national program and it’s given free of charge,” Nadia explained to CNNIndonesia.comSaturday (3/12).

Nadia detailed that the polio vaccine (IPV) injection would not only be given when the baby was 4 months old, but once again at 9 months.

Meanwhile, there is also a free government polio immunization (bOPV) program that is given four times at the ages of one, two, three and four months.

“Starting December 1, 2022, Jakarta along with Banten and West Java will be the first 3 provinces authorized by the Indonesian Ministry of Health to give two free injections of polio vaccine (IPV) to children,” wrote a statement on DKI Jakarta Health Instagram of the agency, Friday (2/12).

The implementation of the polio vaccine injection twice has been in accordance with the Decree of the Director-General for Disease Prevention and Control of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia Number HK.02.02/C/4834/2022 concerning the Technical Instructions for Implementation of the second dose inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV2) immunization schedule on October 5, 2022.

Meanwhile, DKI Jakarta Health Service’s Surveillance, Epidemiology and Immunization Section Chief Ngabila Salama explained the difference between the polio vaccine injection (IPV) and the polio immunization drip (bOPV) which is administered intravenously. oral.

“bOPV protects against types one and three polio viruses, while IPV protects against types one, two and three polio viruses,” he said on Friday (2/12), quoted by Between.

After starting DKI Jakarta, Banten and West Java, the Ministry of Health is expected to inject polio vaccine twice for children at the same time in early 2023 across Indonesia.

The acceleration of immunization, including the administration of the polio vaccine, takes into account the findings of the Ministry of Health related to a polio case in Aceh in November 2022.

Polio case outcomes are estimated to have been affected by failure of polio vaccination, both oral and injectable, for four consecutive years in districts/cities of Aceh province. The case also prompted the local government to establish polio extraordinary event status (KLB).
