The Italian police have identified the driver who hit the former cyclist Rebellino

Rebellin, 51, died after being hit by a truck while training near Vicenza. According to the investigators, the driver stopped, went to look at the cyclist lying down and then walked away.

Police identified the driver from security camera footage and photos and videos taken by witnesses to the crash. In the meantime, however, the man has returned to Germany, where he has finally been tracked down.

The driver, who has previously driven under the influence of alcohol and once escaped in an accident in 2001, has not yet been arrested. According to the media, because German laws do not recognize the Italian classification of the crime.

Rebellin dominated the Amstel Gold Race, Walloon Arrow and the Liège-Bastogne-Liège classics in 2004 and only recently retired permanently. Even so, he still started at the Monaco criterium at the weekend, at which former Belgian road cycling world champion Philippe Gilbert bid farewell to his career. Early on, he met other stars like Peter Sagan or two-time Tour de France winner Tadej Pogačar.
