The Austrian Society of Otolaryngology has stated that sinusitis is an inflammation of the mucous membrane lining the sinuses, explaining that it is due to several causes, most notably a bacterial or viral infection.
The association explained that the causes also include allergies, respiratory diseases such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and sites of anatomical narrowing that prevent sinus ventilation, such as curvature of the nasal septum and large adenoids, as well as to smoke.
Symptoms of sinusitis are purulent discharge from the nose, complete blockage of the nose, decreased sense of smell and taste, and bad breath from the mouth, as well as headaches, a feeling of pressure in the head, swelling of the nose, fever, and fatigue.
Sinusitis is treated with decongestants and mucus thinners. In case of bacterial infection, antibiotics are used. For anatomical problems such as nasal septum deformity and large adenoids, surgery is used to correct the deformity or remove the polyps.
