Construction begins on the Hydro-Québec power line for New York

Work on the Champlain Hudson Power Express transmission line, a Hydro-Quebec electric power transmission line to New York, started Wednesday in Whitehall, in the US state of the same name.

Recall that Hydro-Québec had signed a historic contract in November 2021 with the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority for the export of 10.4 terawatt hours of electricity to the American metropolis for 25 years.

This renewable energy pipeline will significantly reduce New York City’s greenhouse gas emissions.

“I am very proud to be able to work together to achieve our ambitious climate goals,” said Martine Biron, minister of international relations and Francophonie and minister responsible for the status of women, on Wednesday.

“Today we are making a historic gesture as Hydro-Québec and its partner TDI are starting work on one of the most important projects to achieve the energy transition. The completion of the Champlain Hudson Power Express transmission line sends a strong signal,” he added.

A 60km portion of the 545km transmission line will be owned by Crown Corporation and the Mohawk community of Kahnawake.

The work is expected to take place until the autumn of 2025.
