A breath of fresh air for those who expect electric motorcycles to be cheaper, the government is preparing further incentives. Next year, electric motorcycles will receive a subsidy of IDR 6.5 million. In addition to the lower price, the cost of daily use is also cheaper.
The figure of Rp 6.5 million was revealed by the coordinating minister for maritime affairs and investment, Luhut Pandjaitan. He said that the subsidy given for electric motorcycles was IDR 6.5 million for the purchase of an electric motorcycle.
“If you want to convert motorcycles to electricity next year, yes. You will get subsidies later,” Luhut said as quoted by Reuters.
As regards the cost of daily use of an electric motorcycle, the Ministry of Transport through the Directorate General of Land Transport has carried out calculations, where a liter of fuel is equivalent to 1.2 kWh of electricity.
Day-to-day operation of electric motorcycles can be more economical than internal combustion engine (ICE) engines. With the price of electricity per kWh Rp. 1.444 or Rp. 1,500 rounded, which means that 1.2 kWh of electricity costs about Rp. 1,700. This means that the use of electric vehicles is much more efficient than a liter of fuel, which currently costs Rp. 10,000 – Rp. 21,000.
Meanwhile, for electric cars, each kilowatt-hour (kWh) can make an electric car travel up to 5-7 kilometers, while with an electric car’s average full capacity of 45 kWh, electric vehicles can travel up to 300 kilometers.
“There are currently many EVs that look great, are environmentally friendly with respect to clean energy, and are more economical than fossil fuel powered vehicles (BBMs). On a day-to-day basis, they can be up to 75% more efficient in a day compared to motorcycles with fuel. If you usually spend Rp. 100,000 a day, Rp. 25,000 is enough,” Transport Minister Budi Karya said some time ago.
The Transport Minister explained that the government has prepared a strategy to continue increasing the use of electric vehicles in Indonesia. The prepared strategy is: The first phase aims at the use of electric vehicles in ministries/agencies and local governments. Secondly, the use of electric vehicles in mass transportation, namely: buses, taxis and motorcycles (motorcycle taxis online). So the third is to increase charging facilities (charging stations and battery replacement places).
