Coach of the German national team Hansi flick reluctant to underestimate Costa Rica ahead of the two teams meeting in the 2022 World Cup Group E final match early Thursday (2/12) WIB.
Flick also answered questions from the media about whether his team could score more than seven goals like Spain did in their previous match when they defeated Costa Rica. Flick stressed that the most important thing for them is victory in the match of this evening.
“It would be very presumptuous and very disrespectful to Costa Rica if we thought we were going to score eight goals,” flick said.
“We will be happy if we win the game.”
Flick asked his side to leave the shadow of disappointment at the 2018 World Cup, when his side were eliminated from the group stage after being beaten 0-2 by South Korea.
According to him, now the mood in the locker room has improved after the 1-1 draw with Spain, when Niclas Fullkrug scored a decisive equalizer.
“I think we’re heading in the right direction,” Flick said.
Germany had no choice but to secure the three points when they faced Costa Rica. On paper, Germany should be able to win against Costa Rica, who lost 0-7 in their opening match against Spain.
Germany will finish second if Die Mannschaft win over Costa Rica and Spain win over Japan. If Germany win and Spain lose, Germany will need to overturn an eight-goal deficit to progress.
If Germany win and Japan draw against Spain, Hansi Flick’s side can go through if they manage to win by more than a one-goal difference over Costa Rica.
