At the United Nations Security Council in New York, he called on Turkey and Kurdish-led troops in the north to rein in and restore the relative calm that has prevailed for the past three years. Pedersen also pointed to an increase in ceasefire violations in the last rebel-held region of northwestern Idlib, suspected Israeli airstrikes in Damascus, Homs, Hama and Latakia, and airstrikes on the Syrian-Iraqi border.

Turkish President Erdogan ordered air strikes against Kurdish groups in northern Syria and Iraq after a bomb blast in Istanbul in early November killed six people. He has also threatened a ground offensive. In addition, there are repeated deployments of other parties involved in the conflict.
