The director never hid his attitude to the famous award.
Vladimir Menshov received an Oscar statuette in 1981 for the film Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears. The director became one of the few Soviet directors who, over the years of the award’s existence, became its laureate. However, Menshov himself, as it turned out, was not very impressed with his own success.
According to the director, he learned about winning the award on April 1 on television, as he was not allowed to enter the United States. At first he was sure that it was a joke, but after that the information was confirmed. After some time, he received a statuette loved by many from the American Film Academy, but he chose not to show it.
“I don’t even know where the American statuette is. In the countryside, probably somewhere, — said the director on the YouTube show “Menshova herself».
The fact is that the celebrity did not consider one of the world’s leading film awards a worthy prize. According to him, the “Oscar” consists mainly of advertising, and he is frightened that the whole world is “praying” for the American award. And that’s why he chose to remove the statuette, which he didn’t treat with respect.
