Director Koki Mitani will appear on VTR’s educational variety program “Sunday’s First Ear Study” (TBS) which airs November 27.
As a behind-the-scenes story of NHK’s taiga drama ‘Kamakura-dono no Thirteen’ which he directed himself, he revealed why he nominated actor Masaki Suda to play the role of Minamoto no Yoshitsune.
Yoshitsune, played by Suda, has a thirst for war, and while he has a brutal nature that chooses no means to win, he usually acts innocent.
Regarding Suda’s acting, Mr. Mitani praised the program that aired on 9/11: “It was perfect. It was wonderful.” He said, “she acted 120%” of the script I wrote with the desire to act like that.
The two are such a perfect match, but their meeting was unexpected. On the 27th broadcast “Hatsumigaku”, a meeting with Suda was reported as a secret talk.
Mr. Mitani says after meeting and talking to the actors for the first time, he writes the script with the image of ‘I want this person to do this’ and ‘I want him to say this line.’ .
It seems that the first meeting with Suda took place “accompanied” at the award ceremony of the “Japan Academy Prize”.
“At that time, I completed Yoshitsune in my head. It’s not about where I saw him. The whole picture…” .
Koki Mitani’s commitment to a complete script
“Director Mitani’s screenwriting method is not uncommon in the industry and is called ‘tategaki’, but his effort is enormous. In the 1994 radio drama ‘Warai no Daigaku’, the stage and film There is an anecdote which was rewritten from the ground up to suit each actor.” (entertainment writer)
