On the occasion of the special “On the field”to the microphones of Milan television, Paul Maldini came back to talk about the Derby della Madonna also revealing a particular backstory.
Maldini he stated that he, as well as most football players, lived for the kind of emotions that a Derby of such thickness. But not only that, to find out more we offer you his statements.
Maldini’s words
“It’s beautiful, pleasant. Having played more games than anyone in Milan, that’s also normal. I would have had to be injured several times not to have this record. The Derby and other matches like Milan-Juve or Milan-Naples at the time could give you a different emotional charge. This emotional charge, especially in the early years, limited me a little. I remember that in the first 2-3 derbies I wasn’t able to play a high-level game. Then once I got used to that kind of stress it became the game I was waiting for the most. In the end we live to experience those emotions“.
“On the only goal scored against Inter. I wanted to score, but I didn’t think of cornering her. It was a difficult ball from Donadoni. I was almost in the air and from there I had little to do. Sometimes something perhaps more instinctive can surprise even the goalkeeper and so it was. Being a defender, I’ve never been so attracted to having to score goals. Of course it’s the best feeling after winning a title, but it’s never been a fixation for me. I’ve always tried to understand my role as that of a defender.”
