The reason for the decline of the Lebanese pound against the dollar
The Lebanese pound has started declining gradually since 2019 against the US dollar, coinciding with an acute liquidity crisis and banks have stopped providing depositors with their dollar money, while the official exchange rate is still pegged at 1507 pounds.
The Lebanese pound lost 90% of its value as the financial crash entered its third year and led to widespread poverty, paralysis of the financial system and a freeze on depositors’ savings in Lebanon’s biggest crisis since the civil war between 1975 and 1990.
The Lebanese economy has been facing major difficulties over the past three years which have put the country’s currency in a critical situation, especially in light of the continuing ambiguity of the political situation.
