The Costa Rican side claimed their first three World Cup points today after beating Japan 1-0, in a match of the second round of Group E of the FIFA World Cup being played in Qatar.
The Costa Ricans achieved this long victory with a goal scored by right fielder Keysher Fuller in the 81st minute following an assist from Yeltsin Tejeda.
Although the Japanese had more ball possession, the Ticos defended their goal well and applied the counterattack at the right time in this match played at Ahmed bin Ali Stadium.
With this win, Costa Rica sits third in Group E standings, tied in points of 3 units with Spain and Japan, albeit with a worse goal difference of less than 6.
The day of this group ends this afternoon with the eagerly awaited match between Spain and Germany.
Costa Rica still has a chance to qualify for the second round of the World Cup.
For this, they have to overcome the tough obstacle of the German team, which they will face in the last match of the group series, next Thursday, December 1, at 2 in the afternoon, at the Al Bayt stadium.
